The History of the Central City Volunteer Fire Department

Founding and the Blackburn Legacy (1921)

The formal history of fire protection in Central City, Kentucky, began during a transformative era for Muhlenberg County. On October 10, 1921, the Central City Council officially passed a motion to establish a dedicated fire protection service, recognizing the urgent need for a structured response to the growing community's safety needs.

In December of that year, the department’s operational foundation was solidified through the appointment of its first firefighting team. John W. Blackburn, along with his sons Harry and George Blackburn, were employed as the city’s inaugural firefighters. This family-led initiative did more than just provide immediate protection; it established a multigenerational legacy of service that has served as the bedrock of the department for over a century.

Evolution and Professional Growth

Since its modest beginnings in the early 1920s, the department—widely recognized as Muhlenberg County Station 2—has evolved from a small, family-operated unit into a sophisticated, full-service emergency response organization. As the city grew, so did the complexity of its needs, prompting the department to transition into a "combination" model.

Today, the Central City Fire Department is comprised of a dedicated cohort of full-time professional firefighters supplemented by a robust team of approximately 30 to 40 volunteer firefighters. This blend of career and volunteer personnel ensures that the department remains a cost-effective yet highly elite force, maintaining 24/7 readiness for the residents of Central City and the surrounding 15-square-mile district.

A Comprehensive Service Profile

The modern CCFD is far more than a fire suppression unit. Operating out of its headquarters at 207 North 2nd Street, the department manages a high volume of calls—often exceeding 1,400 per year. The scope of their professional expertise includes:

  • Advanced Fire Suppression: Expert response to residential, commercial, and industrial structure fires.

  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS): Providing critical first-responder care, with medical incidents now accounting for the vast majority of the department's annual call volume.

  • Technical Rescue & Extrication: Specialized response for vehicle accidents and complex rescue operations.

  • Disaster Management: Serving as a primary shield against natural disasters and large-scale community emergencies.

Commitment to Excellence and Future Vision

In accordance with the standards set by OSHA, NFPA, and the Kentucky Fire Commission, the Central City Fire Department prioritizes rigorous training and the implementation of modern technology. Every member of the team—both career and volunteer—undergoes exhaustive preparation to uphold the values of safety and community service.

By honoring the pioneering spirit of the Blackburn family while embracing the technological advancements of the 21st century, the Central City Volunteer Fire Department continues to stand as a steadfast guardian of Muhlenberg County, committed to protecting the lives and property of its citizens with unwavering professionalism.
